Switzerland Surprise Engagement Shoot
One year ago, Leslie told me he wanted to plan a surprise proposal in Switzerland for his girlfriend. Not only did he want to propose, he also wanted to do a pre-wedding shoot the very next day to make use of the fact that they are already in Switzerland with one of the most stunning nature in the world! You can read more about the shoot here. While he did a lot of research on different locations for his proposal, he trusted me to find the perfect proposal location in Switzerland that is accessible yet private, and providing some of the best views of the Alps in winter. I knew just the place for him!
We first picked up his friends with our car who had his saxophone, a speaker, a bouquet, as well as champagne glasses to jazz up the proposal spot. I decided to bring him to Engstligenfälle Adelboden, the second highest waterfall in Switzerland. Besides some dog walkers and hikers there, it is generally a very quiet and private photoshoot location in Aldenboden. The proposal spot is just a 3-minute walk from the carpark. We set up there and waited for their arrival while pretending we were tourists. We took pictures for Leslie to tell him exactly how to stand for the perfect proposal backdrop. I think the pictures taken during this surprise proposal speak for how gorgeous and breathtaking Switzerland is for a once in a life-time occasion like this one. Our videographer Roland met him in the bathroom, to attach the mic and walked casually to the proposal spot. After a few minutes, Leslie arrived with Kelly, while pretending to take pictures for her and making her pose, he got himself ready and started the proposal by playing the saxophone to the song “月亮代表我的心 The moon represents my heart” by Teresa Teng.
Perfect proposal idea in Switzerland
After the exciting proposal at this beautiful location in Adelboden, Switzerland, we had a mini engagement shoot at this beautiful location to capture the beautiful moments in this new chapter of their lives. Even though it was cold and snowy, with the glowing sunshine, we managed to get some great shots without their jackets!
Where to propose in Switzerland? Tips for proposing in Switzerland!
1) Quiet Spot - If you’re hiring a photographer and you want to celebrate this moment in private, the best place to propose in Switzerland would be quiet and less touristy places that are still scenic. Your photographer, who knows the off-beaten tracks, may just have the right locations for you.
2) Accessible places - It is probably your first time heading to this location, and even your first time in Switzerland. Try to choose a location where you know transportation to get there is reliable. I tend to avoid cable cars because you never know if they stop due to bad weather or maintenance. The fewer moving parts and unknown factors, the better. I know a few locations that are accessible by both cars and trains! We're taking the guessing out of the game, especially for proposing to the love of your life in Switzerland!
3) Season - While the Alps look more magical in winter, would your girlfriend enjoy shooting in the snow and the cold? Proposing in the summer in Switzerland is equally breathtaking too!
4) Dress your part - Pick something that isn’t too telling but still great for a photoshoot! If you like, you can also change for the shoot, although your partner may grow suspicious about you bringing a change of clothes.
5) Set the scene - While the scenic landscape in Switzerland is already enough for creating the perfect proposal, by asking your photographer to bring a bouquet and champagne glasses for a mini celebration afterwards would really enhance the experience for your partner and you!
